It’s Pride Month! The month of June therefore focuses on equality. LGBTQ+ is the abbreviation for societal acceptance of the der Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer and Intersex community. Apparently, it’s becoming increasingly common to accept and celebrate any sexuality. However, it obviously hasn’t always been like than.

Well, it is hard to imagine that in Germany same-sex marriage only became legal in 2017. In Switzerland however it’s still not allowed yet. But countries like Germany also show that our society is ready for a change and willing to stand up for human rights. We now focus on our own identity and sexual development and to celebrate it publicly.

The Rainbow Dresscode

Of course, fashion labels used the theme of pride monthas inspiration for their collections. The latest Levi’s campaign for example, focuses on homosexuality and transexuality. The models are wearing rainbow colored shirts and jackets – inspired by the rainbow flag that was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978. He was an artist and activist who supported the LGBTQUI+ community with lots of passion. So some of the Levi’s pieces have „I AM“, „I AM PROUD“ und „I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE“ printed on them. It shows that we should appreciate individuality and the bright future that is ahead of us.

Shop The Weekday "Rainbow-Collection":

The Swedish fashion brand Weekday also jumped on the bandwagon and designed a collection dedicated to equality for this month. The “Rainbow-Collection” shows T-shirts in every color of the equality flag. The collection an homage to the activist, who gave every color its special meaning: sunlight, healing, life, sex, harmony, art, nature, spirit. Short and simple terms, everyone can identify with. Those were also incorporated as slogans on Weekday’s T-Shirts.

Besides Levi’s and Weekday, there are several other brands that commit themselves for Pride Month– for instance Converse with their unisex collaboration with Miley Cyrus or Urban Outfitters. These companies shape their young customers and therefore our whole society. This kind of influence is positive for everyone, including the fashion industry. We would wish for more of that and can’t wait to see what labels will surprise us with next!
