Mirrors everywhere, surrounded by makeup, blush brushes and lipsticks. At a first sight, Michele Magnani’s world looks like a beauty paradise. And as a senior artist of MAC Cosmetics, the Italian is definitely living his dream. However, even though the products on the makeup tables appear very tempting, the actual backstage life is quite stressful. So, in between putting on glitter gel on the model’s eyelids and the last lipstick finishes for the Stella Jean Show at Milan Fashion Week, Magnani still found some time for a short interview – talking about his main source of inspiration and the empowering makeup trend for the upcoming spring/summer 2019 season.
CARMITIVE: How does the makeup look for today’s Stella Jean show look like?
MICHELE MAGNANI: It’s a trip from Brazil to Africa. I imagined a traveling woman with a fresh and healthy skin. For her look, water is the first element. This is why I used the Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation. Its finish is very watery and natural and it actually stands for real skin. The eyes are very important as well. I thought of my traveling woman finding her oasis in the desert, drinking water and looking up in the sky where she sees the beautiful stars. Therefore, I used the Dazzleshadow Liquid – a gel with glitter inside. I call it a mix of sensation.
How does this makeup fit with the spring/summer 2019 collection from Stella Jean?
I think it fits very well, because of the various colors and rich details we needed a clean makeup. Clean but shiny at the same time. Therefore, we just set some highlights with the glittery eyelids, the highlighter and a healthy, sun kissed look. This makeup is the best friend for this collection.
Looking towards the next season, what is the makeup trend for spring/summer 2019?
Women have started to play more with makeup without being afraid or shy. This is what we need now. We need to experiment with colors, glitter and new elements without being scared. Until now, women were often afraid to be judged if they would try out something new with their makeup looks. However, since self-confidence keeps arising, we also have to be more confident with our makeup. You only live once. Life is amazing. We need to set some colorful statements – we need to feel beautiful and different at the same time!
Your three tips for the perfect everyday makeup?
My first recommendation is: be yourself. Second, use the right product. This especially applies to foundation because if you choose the wrong one, the whole makeup won’t look good. So, my secret for a beautiful makeup is definitely the right foundation with the ideal tone and texture. Last but not least, make sure to moisturize your skin before and after applying your makeup with a good hydrating cream.
Apart from everyday looks, your job is to constantly create new makeup looks. What is your main inspiration apart from beauty?
Watching the real people. I think we can take so much inspiration from just watching people. Sometimes, I sit in the bar while drinking a glass of wine and observing what is happening around me. It’s so important to understand and to respect each other. This is what will keep us inspired forever.
