Today, sneakers especially mean community and solidarity. Not just because you can buy them anywhere, but because everyone can identify himself with sneakers. From students to business people or gallerists, the sporty shoes have become part of every wardrobe. The initial starting point of the sneakers’ mania however, traces back to exactly 100 years ago. Back then though, the quiet shoes with the rubber soles were only meant to be worn by British cricket players. They allowed them to sneak up their opponents during the game. That’s also how the story behind the name: sneakers were meant to sneak, of course. Thinking of the loud leather soles people used to wear at that time, this was kind of a big deal.
